Originally built in 1941 by pioneering architect Edith Northman, this historic residence represents the work of one of Southern California’s most significant early architectural voices. Born in Denmark and relocated to the United States in 1914, Northman became the first woman registered as an architect in Los Angeles, helping shape the region’s residential architectural landscape at a time when few women held positions in the profession. The original home is defined by its L-shaped plan, cross-gabled roofline, clapboard detailing at the gable ends, and prominent brick chimney along the east elevation facing Willaman Drive.

In collaboration with Los Angeles–based architecture firm bB|A Studios and preservation consultants Historic Resource Group, award-winning interior designer Ryan Saghian has thoughtfully reimagined the residence—blending the timeless charm of East Coast architecture with the relaxed sophistication of California living.

With deep respect for the home’s historic integrity, the two-story addition has been carefully positioned at the rear of the residence, set behind the primary roof ridge to preserve the original form and streetscape presence. While the addition echoes the materiality and proportions of the original structure, subtle distinctions—including a hipped roofline, simplified detailing, and more contemporary window profiles—allow the new architecture to remain clearly legible as a thoughtful evolution rather than imitation.
